I had a full day to explore Ponta Delgada and parts of São Miguel island with a tour guide I found on Viator. From the airport, there is an airbus shuttle that costs 5 Euros RT (you must arrange the pickup at the time of booking) which drops you off at various points across the city.
I stayed at the Nook Hostel and they were kind enough to allow an early check-in (8 AM!).
First let's start with Ponta Delgada:
The City Arch!
City Hall (you can climb to the top for a view of the city , but only from Monday to Friday)
I had lunch at Taverna Acor located on Rua dos Mercadores #41 just a block or two from the main church. I must say the food was incredible. I was the first one there when it opened at noon, but a few minutes later a large group of German tourists overloaded the place (almost 17-18 tourists with their guide).
Fireman's sausage... the sausage is on fire and you cut off parts of it and eat it with bread...
Chouriço à Bombeiro
Then it was off to explore the island with the help of Prazer D'Aventura a local guide which I hired on Viator.
Lagoa do Fogo
Fog quickly settling in on the lake...
We then stopped at the "Caldeira Velha" natural park where you can take a dip in the thermal waters.
Then it was off to the coast to check out the incredible waves near the town of Ribeira Grande.
Back in town I found some interesting graffiti near my hostel.
