Carcassonne is a lovely hilltop town with a old castle which was restored in the 1800s. The city is famous for it's Bastille Day fireworks celebration. As we are based in Barcelona, we decided to visit this historical town as a weekend getaway. We took the TGV from Barcelona Sants and after a quick change at Narbonne we were in Carcassonne.

We stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton which recently opened and has some incredible views of the historical castle and served as an excellent place to view the Fireworks. The hotel was lovely and just about a 10 minute walk from the train station.

Enjoying the view from our room...

Our hotel room had an excellent view of the Castle and we are all set for the evening fireworks!

We had lunch in the old town, I had a Cassoulet that was forgettable but for dinner we had some tasty crepes at a local restaurant, if you don't speak French it's better to speak Spanish over English. This part of France is near the Spanish border and in my opinion the locals reacted better to Spanish than English. (Just my two cents!).

The following day we explored the castle (be careful temperatures can reach mid 30s C) so lots of water is needed.

Some local dishes...

The next day France won the World Cup and it was pure madness... French celebrating the World Cup win !!
